Leaving a Lover is a new project in which Maja connects the transformations of fairy tale heroines with songs about the end of love relationships. Along with seven new songs, motifs from fairy tales are intertwined with contemporary events. The confessional form of the performance is based on the tradition of oral transmission of fairy tales. Interpreting our heroic endeavors, we return to the healing qualities of fairy tales and their unique and irreplaceable role in life situations that ask us to assume the costume of a hero or heroine. This dramatization may be the heroine’s journey, but without a story in which the heroine would have a happy ending. Through music, she travels to the center of her feelings, for which there was no time or place in fairy tales.

Through her author’s alias POMA – Maja combines her musical and theatrical practice, creating projects unencumbered by previous authors’ work, either as an actress or a musician. After many years of work in the institutional theatre and acting on the music scene with a continuous schedule of premieres, songs, albums, and videos, disrupting that established order of activities seems destructive but equally necessary. Poma Oma Ma was the first performance in the making that Maja conceived and performed with guitarist Ivan Kapec. The play deals with women’s communication throughout history and connects generations of women from their surroundings and their life moments captured in a written or spoken message.

Band musicians: Ivan Kapec – baritone guitar, Hrvoje Galler – piano, Jurica Štelma – double bass, Borko Rupena – drums, Mario Bočić- saxophone

The album of the same name will be released in 2024.

Leaving a lover is part of Maja’s artistic research, which began in the Master’s program at the Catalyst Institute in Berlin.
